How to travel in Africa: #1 Not losing time

In Baobab Guides we have thought that, as we know everything about travelling, it would be great to share our infinite wisdom and help other travellers. This is why we have created this article series ‘How to travel in Africa’.

The first thing to take into account is that when we travel we shouldn’t lose any time. Our holy couple of weeks free of work should be used as efficiently as possible.

One of the main tips we can give you is this: Make a trip plan as ambitious as possible. You are flying to the other side of the world, you can’t afford to waste a single second! As a rule of thumb, once city per day is quite reasonable.

The bad thing about planning is that it forces you to use your brains and think, but, when on holidays, thinking is the last thing you want to do. The best way of avoiding this hard effort is to join an organised tour, preferably in a bus or minibus. We guarantee, you won’t go unnoticed. These kind of tours, specially the ones all-inclusive (with wristband!) are fantastic. You’ll never waste those extra 10 minutes contemplating the Great Chinese Wall or the Eiffel Tower as normal tourists do! No more feeling lonely: you will always be with other nice tourists like you, like a group of old friends, enjoying and speaking your own language, safe from any danger or unpredicted circumstance thanks to the almighty guide.

Even better: As everything is already organised, you never need to waste your precious time talking to the locals, trying to make hotel reservations, booking train tickets etc. Your guide will talk to them -they are scary anyway- and will make all the arrangements for you!

Kesmo Lodge, Maun (Botswana)

Kesmo Lodge is a School-Hotel in the center of Maun, in Botswana. It has all the classic amenities of a lodge, but doubles as a training ground for students of tourism from the school  Career Dreams Centre. It is the perfect place to do your bit as a responsible traveller before heading into the Okavango Delta.

Easy to find, the Lodge with the Elephant at the main entrance

The students work in all the different posts so they get real hands on experience in reception, the kitchen, as guides … Working more with tourists provides an invaluable experience to them.

The general manager of Kesmo Lodge was also a student from Career Dreams Centre, and does an excellent professional job.
