Sossusvlei, Namib Desert

Sossusvlei, with the the incredible dunes and landscapes of the Namib desert is, along with Etosha, the must-go place in Namibia. The NWR (Namibia Wildlife Resorts) operates two places in the region. As with all the NWR operated accommodation, make sure you book well in advance, either in Windhoek or even before, by email:

Dunes

- Sesriem Campsite:

It is a restcamp at the gates of the park, in the village of Sesriem. There is a small shop, bar, swimming pool and hot water showers. The price for camping is around N$ 270 per tent and N$ 140 per person. It is the cheapest place to sleep in the area, and the closest to the park entrance. This is perfect for seeing the sunrise from the top of the dunes, a classic excursion. The dune most often climbed is the Dune 45, called like that because it is 45 km from Sesriem. Another possible excursion is to the nearby Sesriem canyon.

Around the park there are only lodges, and apart from being more expensive, some of them are too far away so it is not possible to see the sunrise from inside the park for lack of time. Remember that you should never drive in Namibia when it is dark. It is very dangerous. We met a guy who had crashed into an Oryx, killing the poor animal and leaving his car unusable. Be very careful.

- Sossus Lodge:

This luxurious lodge opened its doors in 2007 and is the new jewel of the crown of the NWR operated accommodation. It is inside the park, making even easier to experience the sunrise and sunset from the dunes. The lodge has an excellent restaurant, and the staff is very diligent and professional. There are 25 small independent chalets, connected by elevated wooden walkways. The perfect place if you can afford it.

How to get there: Sesriem Restcamp is in Sesriem, while Sossus Dune Lodge is 4km past the gates into the park.

Spitzkoppe is situated 160 km east from Swakopmund, in the Damaraland region. These rock formations get peak at 1728m above sea level, and form a spectacular view. We highly recommended to for for a trek and enjoy the interesting shapes and beautiful scenery. Take your time to explore the area and its delightful calmness. Keep an eye on the ever changing colour of the rock, specially during sunrise and sunset, when they acquire intense red shades.

In several places in Spitzkoppe you’ll find ancient bushman paintings. The most impressive one is the one called “Bushman Paradise”.

The Spitzkoppe Restcamp lies at the base of the mountain. It is owned and maintained by the local community, and therefore all the money spent here is going to revert on the local economy. The prices are about N$ 30 per person per night for camping and N$ 10 for the car. If you sleep in a bungalow, it costs around N$ 110 – N$ 130.

Zambezi Leather Project (+264 813007990) employs six people, three women and three men. They work mainly with leather, creating clothes, belts and shoes. They are highly skilled workers.
How can you help: You can help by of course buying the products they produce. Also, they usually are in need of chemical products for the leather tanning process, so another possibility is to help them to obtain these. Or simply visit them and talk with them and admire their work.
